Toyota 'Maintenance Required' Light: What It Means and How to Reset It
How to read the light, what service it means, and the two reset methods — for Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and the rest of the lineup.
Unlike the Check Engine light, the MAINT REQD (Maintenance Required) light does not monitor a problem with the engine. It's a simple mileage counter that trips roughly every 5,000 miles to remind you of routine service — typically an oil and filter change, a tire rotation and a multi-point inspection. On newer Toyotas you may first see a 'Maintenance Required Soon' message around 4,500 miles before the steady light at 5,000.
Reset method 1 — trip-button (analog cluster or standard display): turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine and show the odometer (not Trip A/B). Press and hold the trip-meter reset button, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON again; keep holding about 10-15 seconds until the light flashes, beeps and clears. On push-button cars, press Start twice without pressing the brake.
Reset method 2 — multi-information display (newer models with a center color screen): turn the ignition to ON, use the steering-wheel controls to open the settings (cog/gear) menu, choose 'Scheduled Maintenance', and confirm to reset.
One thing to know: resetting the light yourself does not void your warranty. What matters for warranty is that the scheduled service was actually performed at Toyota's recommended intervals — so reset only after the work is done, and keep a record of it.
