Toyota 'Maintenance Required' Light: What It Means and How to Reset It

The Toyota MAINT REQD light is a mileage-based service reminder, not a fault warning. It comes on about every 5,000 miles to say routine service (usually an oil change and tire rotation) is due. It's safe to drive with it on, but reset it only after the service is done.

How to read the light, what service it means, and the two reset methods — for Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and the rest of the lineup.

Unlike the Check Engine light, the MAINT REQD (Maintenance Required) light does not monitor a problem with the engine. It's a simple mileage counter that trips roughly every 5,000 miles to remind you of routine service — typically an oil and filter change, a tire rotation and a multi-point inspection. On newer Toyotas you may first see a 'Maintenance Required Soon' message around 4,500 miles before the steady light at 5,000.

Reset method 1 — trip-button (analog cluster or standard display): turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine and show the odometer (not Trip A/B). Press and hold the trip-meter reset button, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON again; keep holding about 10-15 seconds until the light flashes, beeps and clears. On push-button cars, press Start twice without pressing the brake.

Reset method 2 — multi-information display (newer models with a center color screen): turn the ignition to ON, use the steering-wheel controls to open the settings (cog/gear) menu, choose 'Scheduled Maintenance', and confirm to reset.

One thing to know: resetting the light yourself does not void your warranty. What matters for warranty is that the scheduled service was actually performed at Toyota's recommended intervals — so reset only after the work is done, and keep a record of it.

FAQ

What does the Toyota Maintenance Required light mean?
It's a mileage-based reminder (about every 5,000 miles) that routine service — usually an oil change, tire rotation and inspection — is due. It is not a malfunction warning like the Check Engine light.
Is it safe to drive with the maintenance required light on?
Yes. It's a service reminder, not a fault. But schedule the routine service soon, and reset the light once the work is done.
How do I reset the Toyota maintenance light?
Either hold the trip-meter reset button while turning the ignition to ON until the light clears, or on newer models open the multi-information display settings, choose Scheduled Maintenance and confirm.
